Are the Steelers Fun Again? Steelers Hold Off the Jets in Week 1

It’s only Week 1, but let’s be honest: the Pittsburgh Steelers have not been fun to watch for years. The Kenny Pickett era wasn’t fun. The Russell Wilson experiment wasn’t fun. The defense was usually solid, Chris Boswell was still elite, and T.J. Watt gave you highlights every Sunday. But the offense? Straight up unwatchable. You would sit through drives hoping something would happen, only to see a punt or a stalled three-and-out. Today was different. For the first time since Ben Roethlisberger retired, the Steelers looked like a team that could actually move the ball and put points on the board.
The defense was ass. No sugarcoating it. They could not stop the run. They got bullied at the line of scrimmage, failed to tackle effectively, and let the Jets’ backs rack up 182 yards on the ground. But here’s the thing: good offense and bad defense equals fun football. And Steelers fans have been begging for fun for years.
Aaron Rodgers Brings Life to the Offense
Aaron Rodgers’ debut with the Steelers didn’t just feel like hype, it was competence on display. He went 22-of-30 for 244 yards and four touchdowns. That’s not managing the game. That’s commanding it. For the first time in years, it felt like the quarterback was capable of taking over when the team needed it.
Calvin Austin III and DK Metcalf were making plays downfield. The running backs weren’t asked to run into a brick wall repeatedly. And when it mattered, Chris Boswell drilled a 60-yard field goal to seal a 34–32 win at MetLife. That is entertaining football. That is watchable football.
It’s been years since Steelers fans could rely on the offense to actually move the ball consistently. Pickett and Wilson eras were marked by conservative play-calling, predictable schemes, and drives that stalled no matter the situation. Rodgers changed that instantly. You can see the difference in how the offense flows, how they take shots downfield, and how the team actually scores points instead of just hoping the defense carries them.
The Defense Was Certified Ass
Now the other side of the ball. The defense today was certified ass. The Jets ran for 182 yards. Breece Hall alone had 107. Justin Fields added 48 on the ground and scored twice. That’s not a “bad day.” That’s actively letting the other team stay in the game. Patrick Queen admitted after the game that they got bullied. He’s not wrong.
The Steelers defense has always been a cornerstone of the team, but today they looked soft and disorganized. They failed to make adjustments and gave up big plays that could have turned the game against them if not for Rodgers and the offense. If they want to compete at a high level this year, run defense has to improve quickly.
Why Good Offense and Bad Defense Is Fun
Here’s the truth: a high-scoring offense and a struggling defense make games exciting. It is fun football. It keeps fans on the edge of their seats. In contrast, the Pickett and Wilson years were frustrating because the defense had to carry lifeless offenses that could not sustain drives. Steelers fans sat through three seasons of waiting for a deep ball, a third-down conversion, or even just something to be exciting. That wait ended today.
Fans finally got to see plays develop, passes completed downfield, and a quarterback who can actually read the defense. Even though the defense struggled, the offense made the game enjoyable. That is what Pittsburgh football has been missing for years.
Looking Back at the Past
The Roethlisberger-Bell-Brown years might seem like “fun” in hindsight, but they were not. That team had superstars, but it was also drama-filled, with off-field issues and constant frustration. Wins felt hollow because they rarely delivered on expectations in the playoffs.
The 2022 through 2024 Steelers were worse in terms of excitement. They were boring, predictable, and riddled with questions about whether they could ever replace Ben. They finished 9–8 in 2022, 10–7 in 2023, and 10–7 again in 2024. Not bad on paper, but not fun. Competent teams that don’t make you care.
A New Chapter for Steelers Football
Today felt like the first page of a new book. Rodgers brought rhythm. The receivers looked dangerous. The play-calling was aggressive. The offense actually scored points without needing miracles.
The defense still has major issues. They could not stop the run. They could not make tackles. But for the first time in a long time, you weren’t watching a Steelers game hoping Boswell would bail the team out. You actually believed the offense could do it themselves.
The Steelers finally gave fans a reason to be excited about the team again. Even if the defense continues to struggle, Rodgers’ arm and a competent offensive scheme make watching football in Pittsburgh fun again.
Can This Last?
The real question is sustainability. Can Rodgers stay healthy for 17 games? Can the defense fix its run-stopping problems before they become a season-long problem? Can the coaching staff keep the offense humming instead of reverting to conservative, three-and-out football?
That will decide if this Steelers team is more than a flash in the pan. But for now, it feels like a reset. A team that can score, take shots downfield, and actually put points on the board is a team worth watching.
Steelers Football Is Watchable Again
Steelers football is finally watchable. Even if the defense keeps looking like certified ass, Rodgers throwing darts, receivers making plays, and Boswell drilling bombs is better than watching Pickett overthrow screens or Wilson scrambling into sacks.
Pittsburgh doesn’t need perfection. They need juice. They need Sunday’s worth sitting through. Today delivered that.
So are the Steelers fun again? After one game, yes. Not because the defense is elite. Not because this is a Super Bowl roster. But because for the first time in years, the offense gives fans a reason to believe every drive could end with points instead of a punt. That is the Steelers we’ve been waiting for.
