Iowa Could Be a Sneaky College Football Playoff Threat

Iowa Hawkeyes, College Football Playoff, College Football, Big Ten Football, Kirk Ferentz

I’m telling you right now.. Iowa could be one of the sneakiest teams in the College Football Playoff this year. I don’t think they’re winning a national championship, but could they steal a game or TWO? Absolutely!

Ohio State showed us the ceiling last week when they walked into Kinnick and beat Iowa 31-14. I don’t think the Hawkeyes can hang with those true heavyweights. But in a 12-team playoff, you don’t have to be one of the four best teams in the country to ruin somebody’s season.

Iowa is 5-1, already went into Michigan and won 20-19, and just beat Washington 41-24 on Friday. FORTY-ONE POINTS FROM IOWA! Jeremy Hecklinski threw three touchdowns in his first career start, Kamari Moulton ran for 208 yards and two scores, and the defense recorded six sacks. If Iowa can actually move the football while still playing that nasty defense we’ve come to expect from them?.. That’s a problem.

And Iowa is exactly the kind of team I wouldn’t want to draw in the first round. Some high-powered offense is gonna show up expecting to roll through them, and suddenly it’s 17-13 in the fourth quarter, every yard is a struggle, and Kirk Ferentz is perfectly happy to keep playing that way.

They’ve already gotten Michigan and Ohio State out of the way, and there’s a real opportunity to make a run through the rest of that schedule.

I can’t see Iowa winning four straight playoff games. But getting into the bracket and making somebody’s December absolutely miserable?.. I can DEFINITELY see that.
