The Knicks’ Championship Ring Phishing Test Was Evil Genius

New York Knicks, NBA, Madison Square Garden, Championship Rings, James Dolan

The Knicks used CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS to trick their own employees into a phishing test.. that is mean as hell, but also kinda genius.

According to Joe Vardon of The Athletic, Madison Square Garden employees received an email congratulating them on getting a FREE championship ring. They even showed two different designs, offered to personalize them, and told employees to click a link to pick their favorite.

Now imagine working for this organization, watching the Knicks win their first championship in 53 YEARS, and thinking you’re finally getting a little piece of that history.

You click the link all excited..

CONGRATULATIONS! You just failed a phishing test and now have to attend mandatory cybersecurity training.

HAHAHA that’s BRUTAL. You could’ve sent a fake password reset or some bullshit gift card offer. Instead, somebody went straight for the one thing these employees would’ve been thrilled to receive!

MSG says it recently got hacked through employee credentials stolen in a similar attack, so I understand why they’re doing these tests. They’ve since admitted the ring bait was a mistake and say they’re giving out more than 275 championship rings and pieces of jewelry.

But man.. whoever came up with that email knew EXACTLY what they were doing.

I’d be sitting through that entire cybersecurity class still wondering if I could get my damn ring.
