The NFLPA wants a FULL investigation into how Jalen Hurts was medically cleared to play in London.. and I’m having a hard time understanding why the NFL apparently wasn’t planning one in the first place.
Hurts was diagnosed with a blood clot in his calf before the Jaguars game. Doctors cleared him to play, he did, and then flew back to Philadelphia. Days later, further testing revealed a deep vein thrombosis and blood clots in BOTH lungs. Now he’s expected to miss the rest of the season.
The NFL says the Eagles handled everything appropriately, and its chief medical officer has defended the decisions that were made. Maybe they did everything right! But the NFLPA says the league already told the union it wasn’t planning an investigation.
So the NFL was involved in coordinating Hurts’ medical care, has decided everything was handled properly, and apparently doesn’t think a formal review is necessary?
This league will spend five minutes examining whether a receiver’s toe touched the sideline from twelve different camera angles.. but we’re supposed to just take its word for it on something THIS serious?
An investigation doesn’t automatically mean somebody screwed up. Blood clots can progress even when doctors make the right decisions. But shouldn’t we at least establish exactly what happened before declaring everything was handled correctly?
If the medical staff did everything right, GREAT! A thorough review should back that up. We’re talking about a potentially life-threatening medical situation, not whether somebody should’ve been flagged for holding.
