The WNBA Finals Sold Out in Atlanta. The Hawks Still Have Dibs.

WNBA, WNBA Finals, Atlanta Dream, Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Valkyries

The Atlanta Dream just sold out a 17,000-seat arena for TWO WNBA Finals games.. and now they might have to play Game 6 in a 3,500-seat building because the Hawks have a regular-season game against Cleveland.

I’m sorry, but that is absolutely ridiculous!

The Finals are tied 2-2, so Atlanta is guaranteed another home game Thursday with a championship potentially on the line. Only problem? The Hawks have State Farm Arena booked that night, and unless somebody figures this out, the Dream are going back to their tiny regular-season arena.

That’s roughly 13,500 fewer seats for a CHAMPIONSHIP game because the Cavaliers are coming to town in October.

And this has been going on the ENTIRE SERIES! Game 3 had to move because of a concert. Game 4 started early so the Hawks could play that night. Now they’re four games into the WNBA Finals and still trying to figure out who has the damn gym reserved.

Here’s what makes this even more ridiculous.. the Dream are moving into State Farm Arena FULL-TIME next season because they’ve outgrown their smaller building! Their fans just sold the big arena out twice, and they might have to go back to the little one for the most important home game of the year.

Listen, I understand moving an NBA game isn’t as simple as changing your dinner reservation. But we’re talking about a potentially championship-clinching WNBA Finals game versus a Hawks-Cavaliers game in OCTOBER.

Imagine finally getting 17,000 people who want to watch your team compete for a championship, only to tell most of them they can’t come because Cleveland has the building Thursday.

That’s a hell of a way to celebrate the growth of your league.
