Sean McVay Went Conservative and the Rams Paid for It

Los Angeles Rams, Sean McVay, Matthew Stafford, Buffalo Bills, NFL, NFL Coaching

The Rams scored 34 points, Matthew Stafford threw for 383 yards, and Puka Nacua caught SEVENTEEN passes.. so naturally Sean McVay decided the offense was too dangerous to trust with the game on the line.

Third-and-5 at Buffalo’s 30 in overtime. Harrison Mevis had already missed a field goal, but McVay called a run into a stacked defense to set up another attempt. That 48-yarder got blocked, and Buffalo won 37-34.

I swear, nothing in football makes me more irrationally angry than coaches suddenly becoming terrified of their own offense at the end of games. You need FIVE YARDS. If Stafford throws it incomplete, you can still kick! If he converts, you’re closer or you’re still driving. Instead, you use third down to protect a field goal attempt from the same guy who already missed one.

And I know this is petty, but I LOVE when those kicks miss or get blocked. You spent the whole night moving the ball, then decided the safest way to win was to stop doing it. Sometimes you deserve exactly that ending.
