Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream just forced the first Game 7 in WNBA Finals history, which is awesome. I just wish the league would start treating these games like they’re actually the Finals. Game 6 tipped off at 12:30 in the afternoon on a THURSDAY. Half the country was sitting at work while an elimination game in the championship series was being played.
I understand there was a scheduling conflict with the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena, but how is moving a championship game into the middle of a workday the best solution? At that point, you might as well throw it on Cartoon Network between episodes of Teen Titans and hope people catch it on their lunch break.
Thankfully, Game 7 is Saturday night at 8 PM, which is exactly when a winner-take-all championship game belongs. Although I do find it ridiculous that the first Game 7 in league history is airing on USA Network and Peacock instead of NBC. You’ve got Angel Reese trying to win a championship against a Golden State team that could win its first title in just its SECOND YEAR of existence. That’s a pretty damn good championship matchup!
The WNBA has spent years trying to grow its audience, and now it has the biggest game in league history. This is the kind of game you want casual sports fans stumbling across while flipping through channels, not something they have to go searching for.
