We complain CONSTANTLY about NFL owners who don’t know football.. now Carlie Irsay-Gordon is getting roasted because she’s actually trying to learn it?
Bill Simmons called the Colts owner taking notes on the sideline “nuts” and “bonkers” after a video of her asking coaches about play calls in London went viral. And yeah, the visual is objectively funny. The OWNER is standing there with a headset, play sheet and notebook like she has a quiz after the game.
But she’s been doing this since the Chuck Pagano era. The Colts say she listens to the coaches’ communication because she wants to understand how the football operation actually works, not because she’s trying to call plays. She even joked this week that on a good day she has about a “fifth-grade” understanding of the game.
GOOD! She owns the damn football team. She’s eventually involved in decisions about the people coaching it, building it and running it. I’d rather she understand what those people actually do than sit in a suite, know nothing and make those decisions off vibes.
If she starts telling Shane Steichen what to call on 3rd-and-7, light her up. Listening, taking notes and asking questions?.. I’m struggling to see the scandal.
Apparently the ideal NFL owner is supposed to know nothing about football, write the checks and then fire everybody when the football they never bothered to understand goes bad.
