Imagine paying for a new streaming service just to watch your basketball team.. and ONE WEEK into the NBA season, finding out you might not have needed it.
The Cavaliers, Pacers, Grizzlies, Timberwolves and Spurs all started the season with their local broadcasts exclusive to DAZN. Now, just one week later, all FIVE teams have deals to put those same games on DirecTV for customers with eligible packages.
And listen, making games more accessible is a GOOD thing! But imagine being a Cavs fan who already paid for DAZN because you thought that was your only option.. only to discover the games are now available through the DirecTV package you’ve had for years.
Every sports league talks about growing the game, reaching new audiences and making the fan experience better. Meanwhile, we’ve reached a point where watching your favorite team requires researching broadcasting rights, checking blackout restrictions and figuring out which of your six subscriptions actually carries the game.
At some point we stopped asking WHEN the game was on and started asking WHO owns the rights to let us watch it.
Can we please just make watching sports NORMAL again? It shouldn’t be this damn complicated to watch your own team play basketball.
