BYU-Utah at 10 AM? College Football’s TV Problem Is Getting Ridiculous

BYU Cougars, Utah Utes, Holy War, Big 12, College Football, TV Scheduling

BYU and Utah are about to play one of the biggest games in the Big 12 this season.. and the Holy War is kicking off at TEN IN THE MORNING!

Utah is 7-0, BYU is 6-1, both teams are ranked in the TOP 10, and this is the first 10 AM Holy War since 1996. You’d think a game with this much riding on it would get an incredible Saturday night atmosphere at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Instead, fans are going to be tailgating while most people are still making breakfast.

And the timing of this announcement is hilarious. Utah’s athletic director Mark Harlan was JUST complaining last week about how many late-night games they’ve been getting. Well, congratulations! Your biggest rivalry game is now scheduled before lunch.

I understand 10 AM in Utah is noon on the East Coast, and television networks have schedules to fill. But we’re talking about one of college football’s best rivalries, with potential conference championship and playoff implications. This is EXACTLY the kind of game you want under the lights with a packed stadium going absolutely nuts.

College football keeps talking about protecting its traditions.. meanwhile, we’re letting television networks decide when those traditions are allowed to happen.
