Ten years ago today, Texas Tech fans showed up wearing “TRAITOR” shirts for Baker Mayfield’s return to Lubbock.. and he threw SEVEN touchdowns against them.
Baker had left Texas Tech for Oklahoma, so that crowd was ready to give him hell. He responded with 545 passing yards and seven touchdowns. Normally, that’s the story of the entire weekend. Except Patrick Mahomes was on the other sideline having one of the most ridiculous games a quarterback has EVER played.
Mahomes threw for 734 yards, ran for another 85, and accounted for SEVEN touchdowns of his own. That’s 819 yards BY HIMSELF.. and Texas Tech LOST 66-59.
And somehow, both teams finished with EXACTLY 854 yards of offense. Not roughly the same. The EXACT same number. They combined for an FBS-record 1,708 yards!
Imagine walking into the locker room after your quarterback gives you 819 yards and seven touchdowns, and having to explain why it STILL wasn’t enough.
The 2016 Big 12 was an absolute circus, and I mean that as a compliment.
