Michigan got ONE SECOND added back to the clock earlier this season and used it to win on a Hail Mary.. Notre Dame just needed that same second against BYU, and the officials decided the game was over!
No. 2 Notre Dame lost to No. 8 BYU 28-24 Saturday night, but the ending has turned into a pretty big officiating mess.
With four seconds remaining, CJ Carr threw toward Jaden Greathouse in the end zone. The pass fell incomplete, BYU fans stormed the field, and everybody went home celebrating one of the biggest wins in BYU history.
Except the ball hit the ground with ONE SECOND still on the clock.
The Big 12 has now admitted the replay crew screwed up and Notre Dame should’ve gotten another play from the 8-yard line. And there was already controversy over the pass itself, with ABC rules analyst Matt Austin saying he would’ve supported a defensive pass interference flag.
Now go back to Michigan against Western Michigan in Week 1. Officials restored a second to the clock, Michigan got another snap, threw a Hail Mary and WON THE GAME!
That’s what makes this so ridiculous. We’ve already watched an extra second turn a loss into a win THIS SEASON. Notre Dame was four points down, eight yards from the end zone, and never got its final opportunity.
And the Big 12’s response? They’re going to conduct a complete review of their end-of-game officiating process.
Awesome. Glad we’re reviewing things NOW instead of when there was literally a replay booth full of people whose entire job was to review things.
