Connor McDavid, the sport’s biggest loser, has gone off the rails. McDavid spent his summer backing the hire of Mike Babcock, one of the most hated coaches in the league. He thought Babcock would bring structure and his hard-ass style would create buy-in from the rest of the roster. The only thing McDavid didn’t think about was just how terrible this roster construction is.
The Oilers basically only win games because Leon, McDavid, and Bouchard outscore the opponent. The opponents are always going to score and score a lot. Through two games against the lowly Vancouver Canucks, the Oilers have allowed 16 goals. The Canucks are almost certainly going to end as the worst team in the league and they have score 16 goals, in TWO games, against Edmonton.
Mike Babcock has seemingly not changed a thing. The Oilers play insane hockey. They refuse to play defense. They try to outscore their roster deficiencies. McDavid refuses to buy into playing winning hockey because all he cares about are his individual accomplishments.
I think it’s fair that we stop taking Edmonton seriously as a cup contender. Not only is there enough proof that McDavid is simply a loser, but also this roster just really really stinks. They aren’t winning this year, and we will spend the summer discussing where McDavid is going to go next.
