I genuinely think Victor Wembanyama is starting to reinvent the game of basketball, and I’m not sure we’ve ever seen anything quite like him.
He just finished with 52 points, 24 rebounds, and 8 blocks against Dallas in a game the Spurs won 112-111.
I mean, what are you even supposed to do with a player like this?
We’ve seen dominant big men before, and we’ve seen seven-footers who can shoot. But Wemby combines so many different things that it’s getting harder to figure out what you’re supposed to take away from him.
You can’t just leave him alone on the perimeter, but getting physical with him around the basket isn’t exactly a great option either. Then you go down to the other end, and he’s making guys think twice about shots they would normally take without hesitation.
And what really gets me is that he’s only 22 years old. He’s still figuring out his game, still developing physically, and we’re already watching him put together performances that barely make sense.
I don’t want to get carried away and start declaring where he’s going to rank among the all-time greats, because there’s a long way to go.
But I do think we’re watching a player who could fundamentally change what teams look for in a big man.
And that’s a pretty incredible thing to be watching happen in real time.
