Major League Baseball is proposing a salary cap that could actually FORCE the Pittsburgh Pirates to spend money.. and I cannot believe we’ve reached the point where Rob Manfred might have to tell a professional baseball team to BUY BASEBALL PLAYERS.
MLB’s latest proposal would introduce a $258 million salary cap and a $180 million salary floor in 2028. That means teams like the Dodgers and Yankees would have to cut spending, while 12 other teams, including the Pirates, would have to INCREASE theirs.
Imagine being a Pirates fan and finding out the biggest threat to Bob Nutting’s wallet might be the commissioner of baseball.
We’ve spent years talking about how the Dodgers are ruining baseball because they spend too much money. Meanwhile, we’ve got owners who seemingly treat their payroll like they’re trying to win a competition for who can spend the least.
Now MLB wants to delay implementing the system until 2028 because teams need more time to adjust. Fair enough, but the players still have to agree to this thing, and they’ve been pretty clear about not wanting a salary cap.
I actually love the idea of a salary floor. You want to own a Major League Baseball team? GREAT. Then you should have to spend Major League Baseball money.
Because I don’t think the Dodgers spending money to win is nearly as big of a problem as teams that refuse to do the same.
