Calling Notre Dame’s CFP Advantage Cheating Is Ridiculous

Notre Dame, College Football Playoff, College Football, BYU, Miami Hurricanes, Matt Hayes

Calling Notre Dame a bunch of cheaters for taking advantage of a College Football Playoff rule that everyone agreed to is pretty hilarious.

USA TODAY’s Matt Hayes is arguing that Notre Dame basically has a free pass to the Playoff because the Irish are guaranteed a spot if they finish in the CFP’s top 12.

And listen.. I actually agree that Notre Dame has a pretty sweet deal. No conference championship game to potentially lose, and they get to build their own schedule. But CHEATING? The SEC and Big Ten helped approve this arrangement! Maybe take that up with the people who wrote the rules.

What really got me was Hayes dismissing Notre Dame’s upcoming game against No. 8 BYU because BYU lost to Texas Tech last year, and Texas Tech got shut out by Oregon.

Brother, we’re doing football genealogy now? Somebody lost to somebody who lost to somebody ELSE, so apparently beating a top-10 team doesn’t count anymore?

Notre Dame is 6-0, ranked No. 2, and still has BYU and Miami on the schedule. Those are legitimate opportunities to prove themselves.

You can hate Notre Dame’s independence and think their schedule should be tougher. That’s a perfectly reasonable argument. But acting like Marcus Freeman is running some elaborate criminal enterprise because his team benefits from rules the conferences approved is a little ridiculous.
