Dating back to March of last season, Alexis Lafrenière is averaging over a point per game. He’s also scoring a lot of goals so far this season (7 in 9 games). He was once thought of as a bust who enjoyed one good playoff run. Now it seems like he might actually be good?
I’m not sure about all of this yet. We are less than 10 games into the season, and he’s being force-fed opportunities. The Rangers have two lines, and neither is top tier. That provides significantly more opportunity for Lafrenière, but credit to him for making the most of his elevated role.
Ultimately, while I think Lafrenière is a legitimate NHLer, not a bust, I think his current production is simply a mirage. He will finish the season as a 60-70 point guy, and the Rangers will fade into obscurity because they possess no elite talent with Shesterkin injured.
